When I moved to New York City in March 2000, I wanted to be where the music was, so I went looking for a job at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. After leaving my resumé at Carnegie Hall, I walked out the back to 56th Street and into the old Patelson's Music House where I was hired immediately.
There I was to meet and mix with musicians from the city and all over the world. It was the perfect place for me to be. And I couldn't wait to cross the street one day, and play in the historical and legendary
hall. I am beholden to that dream and I am filled with joy each and every time I walk out onto the stage.

I'm tremendously grateful for the people, musical experiences and boundaries constantly created in my surroundings. Above all, that I am fortunate enough to still be playing my cello with excellent musicians whom I can call friends.
And for good interpreting work that provides me the flexibility and stability to pursue my creative endeavors.
For 2012, I am taking on peacefulness, strength and abundance.
My wish for you is that your dreams be fulfilled.

This is their second Tango-Fado Project and will feature famed bandoneón player, Daniel Binelli.

Bach Invasion in Brooklyn

Pianist Simone Dinnerstein had an idea to take Bach Cello Suites to PS 321 in Park Slope.

18 cellist were scheduled to come in October 20 and were each given 20 minutes in 3 classrooms.

Here inside, we played whichever Suite movements we chose, introduced the cello, Bach and the Suites to the kids.

It was brilliant.

I went at my assigned time, 1:30-300, armed with cello and Music.

My parents were in town so they accompanied me to my assigned groups of Kindergarden, and two 3rd grade classes. I showed them my book of Suites, old worn and beaten, and shared that it was my favorite item to take with me on vacation...always. It's my security blanket and teddy bear. My choices: Suite I, Allemande, Courante and Gigue.

The teachers and children were receptive, enthusiastic and had such great questions. I hope we left a lasting impression of cello, Bach, and art.

The following evening, Bach Invasion was completed with a formal evening performance by cellist Zuill Bailey.

Thank you Simone, for spreading the beauty of music to the a younger generation.

Something to be venerated and passed on.

Dear Cellists,

I would like to thank everyone for working so hard to make the Bach Invasion an extraordinary day, one that so many people will never forget! I think it was one of the musical highlights of my life, between witnessing all of your varied interpretations to the children's reactions and observations of the performances. There was something surreal about spending an entire day hearing Bach suites wafting down the hallways of a public school. Teachers kept coming up to me all day to tell me how moved they were by your performances and how excited their students were about meeting and hearing you. It was a completely wonderful experience for everyone and to me it reflected what being a musician is all about.

I've been playing with the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra since I came to NYC

It's a good faithful friend, and through them I found my beginnings as a freelancer in NYC.

They were my first break at playing principal cellist in Carnegie Hall.

In this concert we'll revisit Brahms' Third Symphony. This was on the program at the first concert I played with them.

Also, come meet their newly assigned principal Conductor, Guerguan Tsenov.

This post is after the fact.
This afternoon I played with fellow freelancers
for some professors at Bronx Community College.
If you've ever seen a green dome at the edge of the Bronx, perhaps on a boat ride,
this is the Gould Memorial Library where we performed in the beautiful Auditorium for the college students.
The architecture on this campus is truly a treasure hidden in this borough...off the 4 train.

James Blachly chose excerpts from Beethoven's 4th Symphony and offered a well thought-out presentation. Afterwards, he conducted us through movements 1 and 2 in their entireties.
Our second work was a guitar concerto by Professor Yarmolinsky...who performed on guitar.

The students were engaged and curious. The Q&A at the end was informative and fun.

As always happens in NYC, I got to see some friends that I see rarely at the occasional gig.
And it's always a motivating factor to know that classical music and especially Beethoven, are being loved by the younger generations.
Always a pleasure.

This is my third season playing with DCINY. My knowledge and choir rep keeps growing.
We've played through loved classics such as Haydn masses, Mozart Masses and Requiem, and coming this summer, Brahms Requiem. We've also premiered and played newer works. Notably, the ever-popular Karl Jenkins; always a crowd pleaser.

Broadcasted Music and Recognitions

2011 marked Mexico's bicentennial celebration for Mexico's Independence from Spain and a centennial celebration of the Revolution.
Last year the Philharmonic of the Americas, POA, marked the celebration with a CD, Mi Alma Mexicana, and several multi city tours.
In November we played in Mexico's City's Auditorio Nacional to an audience of over 10,000.
In the following videos are:
Leyenda de Miliano by Arturo Márquez, a piece written for the Centennial in remembrance of Emiliano Zapata, the heroic General of the South during the Revolution. His name is provoked in the rhythm of the music and legend tells that at his death, the cicadas of Morelia cried for days. You can hear those cries as the piece ends.

In this video we play with Aleks Syntec, a favorite Mexican pop star of mine.

Being in Mexico for these celebrations marked symbolic, special and unforgettable moments for me.

The People we Trust with Our Instruments

Peter Lam re-haired my first bow last month, and the second one this week.

At his shop on West 60th Street

Peter and his son recently opened a location on 60th street on the Upper West Side.
He and his son are very pleasant to encounter and I was quite happy with the re-hair.
I was also invited to go up and play their cellos whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
It's always settling to build a relationship with a luthier.
We put a big trust of our instruments and bows in their hands.

In the mail today...from Stacy

I met Stacy Styles in Amherst, MA during my stay there for my M.F.A.
Stacy always did great work on my cello. It was always a pleasure walking into her home in Amherst, where she kept her shop, to the scent of varnishes and wood. She took such great care of my cello, and I was always happy with her work.
Even now, Stacy still helps me out. I received in the mail some rubber tubing for my bow grip with instructions on how to put it on. So awesome of her!!! Thanks Stacy.

A presentation to musicians by invitation.
We will be encouraging more advanced playersto participate, thereby ensuring a minimum quality of playing. This will alsoprovide a forum to try something new or lead a group in a piece that is

familiar and that might be more challenging.

CRNYC Chamber Session:

This is open to all musicians of skills and levels and love

of music. At any of our spaces, these musicians have

created the audiences and spread the joy of reading

chamber works!

This allows the opportunity for an already existing group

to perform chamber works for CRNYC audiences.

It's one of my favorite pleasures to work directly with a composer.

In 2010 I had a very unique collaboration with Erin Huelskamp with her work A Mind-Dependant Phenomenon, presented by the Boston New Music Initiative.

This piece brought the concept of performing art into my realm.

It was a fantastic fun project. Her intention was to provide the audience with a small experience of what it may be like to be in a practice room practicing an instrument. I even had an acting coaching session as part of my preparation.

I loved performing it! It took me out of my comfort zone, but also opened up an experience I would like to do again.

Another composer, Alessandro Roveri also a musical journalists and critic from Parma Italy, wrote Liebeslied for cello and piano in a more traditional setting. It was a pleasure to work and fine tune his creation along his side. A very delicate and melodic piece, he took Schumann's traditional singing lied as his inspiration. This was premiered in New York City.

In 2011, I met up again with composer Joel Mandelbaum at a concert that played his work Memorail for the String Orchestra. I was principal cellist. Three years prior, I had performed another orchestral work of his and he remembered my participation. We've both decided to work together to bring some of his previous cello works back to life, as well as a cello/violin duo, a string quartet, and other chamber works.

This project will include a number of concerts and possible studio time to record Mr. Mandelbaum's celli opii.

Other collborations in progress include L.A. composer Nick Gianopoulos and the late Joseph Packales.

Nick Gianopoulos contacted me a couple of years ago after finding me through my blog and website. It's a social network introduction! He has since sent me his cello sonata. A recital is in the works for an NYC premiere.

How it is possible to collaborate with a late composer? Dr. Packales wrote a piece that he always meant for me to premiere and play here in New York City. I met him many years ago when I was studying in El Paso; he was a favorite professor of mine. He left El Paso to teach at the University of Southern Maine; he was originally from NYC. We were in the process of beginning the project when sadly Dr. Packales passed away on September 30, 2008. Our last correspondence had been Sepetember 11, a few days before his death. As part of a promise and personal fulfillment, I would like to start the path to getting this work done

Classical Revolution 2011

The folks at Classical Revolution have been busy brainstorming
as to how to raise the bar for our New York City Chapter.

One of our goals has been to find venues in Manhattan to have Chamber Music Sessions.
These would be closer and more accessible for musicians and CRNYC enthusiasts.

January 27 saw a successful presentation and session commemorating Mozart's birthday
at Argo Tea by Colombus Circle.
The venue was charmed and will have us back once a month.

February 16 was another success with the CRNYC Ensemble presenting Brahms Sextet in Bb.
Culture Fix was such a great find and they were thrilled to have use their gallery/bar for casual high art.
We'll be regulars once a month also!

I chose this next work because it takes me out of my comfort spot behind the cello, and asks for an acted performance...but still behind the cello. It's subject matter is also very familiar territory, so an 'acted performance' is not so much necessary.

Erin calls for the intimate moments for a musician in a practice room. The phenomenon of Time passes, slowly or quickly. We procrastinate, play around, stomp, sing and show off.

I display the unpleasantries of time passing by while practicing...and I get to show off some cello rockstar moves interpolated with the ticking of time passing.

About Erin:

Energetic, hardworking and enigmatic, Erin Huelskamp (b. 1982) composes dramatic and comical music that often reflects a philosophical twist on her daily experiences. Co-founder and executive director of the Juventas New Music Ensemble, Ms. Huelskamp voraciously promotes new music – especially by amazing unknown composers – and she strives to draw ever new audiences to the burgeoning sounds of the 21st century....

Trained as a classical dancer for 16 years, Ms. Huelskamp began composing at the age of ten with no musical training. In 2000 she began studies in composition and flute at the University of Missouri-Columbia where she earned a Bachelor of Music in both composition and flute performance; she studied composition with Thomas McKenney and Stefan Freund and flute with Steven Geibel. In 2007, Ms. Huelskamp completed a Master of Music in Composition from the Boston Conservatory, where she studied with Andy Vores, Dana Brayton, and later Ken Ueno.

April 14, 2010 will see the World Premiere of Liebeslied,
a work for cello and piano by Italian Composer Alessandro Roveri

Alessandro takes inspiration from past genius...this particular work for cello and piano channels the lied mastery of Robert Schumann; the cello being the singing voice.
I love playing this piece as it displays its lyrical ease in the lines. It shows off the elegant register of the cello and calls for soft thoughtful gester. Having the composer at the piano is especially a treat, our esp has locked in...and I appreciated his listening to my input as he went through his composing process.

Alessandro holds a degree in Music History from the University of Bologna and
another in Performance from the Conservatory in Parma. For the past ten years, he has worked for the Opera Theater in Modena. He is also a journalistic contributor to Italy's Giornale della Musica.

Alessandro is currently working on a Masters degree in Composition at Hunter College in New York City.

The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education - has paired up with musician from the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas to initiate a Pen Pal program with young musicians and refugees in New York City.

In this mentorship that brings professional musciians and students together
M.U.S.I.C. EXCHANGE (Musically Uniting Students in Correspondence)
has assigned each of us two students. The students have questions ready for us, and at receiving these, we will write a letter. This will happen three time between February and March.

On March 26 we will meet for a rehearsal at the Juilliard school.
Music to be performed includes Danzon No. 2 by Marquez and
a special arrangment"Sugar Hill Bump" by POA member Lev 'Ljova' Zhurbin.

Mahler for the Children of AIDS at Carnegie Hall.
"The concert will raise funds and public awareness for global pediatric AIDS and the prevention-of-mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. What we envisage is a historic musical event that will serve as a memorial for the millions of mothers and children who have lost their lives, a tribute to the resilience of the survivors, and an urgent call for help to the global community."

MISSION:
A benefit concert to raise funds for women and children worldwide affected by AIDS. Beneficiaries are CMMB and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Please consider making a post-concert donation. The concert may beover, but these children need our unending support and commitment.

At 8 pm, Monday, January 12, 2009, Carnegie Hall was the site of an historic event: Mahler for the Children of AIDS, a musical event to raise funds and promote public awareness for global pediatric AIDS. Gustav Mahler’s monumental Third Symphony was performanced by some of the world's finest orchestral musicians, all of whom are generously donated their artistry and time, from ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, The MET Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Albany Symphony, the Emerson Quartet and many other ensembles and conservatories, as well as a chorus of women and children assembled from the major choirs of the East Coast. Concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic Glenn Dicterow lead a section of concertmasters adn quartet violinists. Matthew Muckey, the brilliant new Associate Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonic was a splendid Posthorn soloist. Revered Trombonist and longtime principal of the New York Philharmonic was the Trombone soloist.
The distinguished American mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer was vocal soloist. The choral forces will include the Cathedral Choristers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, Bruce Neswick, Director.
Conducted by George Mathew, who has produced
two previous humanitarian benefit concerts:
Beethoven’s Ninth for South Asia
and Requiem for Darfur.

We spend two days rehearsing with Patti Labelle, José Feliciano, Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan, John Legend and many more for this tirbute to Gloria. She praised the orchestra and marvelled at our ability to play conga. When she first went on the Johnny Carson show, she recalled, the show's band couldn't play it.

México D.F.

Sala Nezahualcoyotl has the best acoustincs in the Americas. It's energizing to play in this atmosphere. Afterwards, the orchestra was invited to Xochmilco by Banda El Recodo, whom had also performed in Houston with us
The orchestra also collaborated with a local youth orchestra. We went in for sectionals, practicing Huapango and Danzon No.2, with an orchestra rehearsal on that same day. On our final day, we gave a concert side by side at the Museo del Papalote.

While in Mexico City, we had much free time to take in the sights and the cities ancient and modern histories; as well as savor it's traditional kitchen and culinary delights.

GUADALAJARA

This visit was short but commandeered one of our best performances. The small unkept stage at the Teatro Galerias shook everytime the percussionists played and the sound wasn't as pristine as Sala Neza, but the orchestra always gives it's all and stayed for two encores.
That morning, a few volunteers had played side by side with the Guadalajara Youth Orchestra as Alondra graciously gave a young conductor a master class. It was a great lesson for us all to see how and why a conductor tics an tocs.

OAXACA

Our visit here was much too short. We traveled to this paradise and gave a concert on the same day. We had little time but some of us did go downtown for an exquisite mole meal and a short walk in the colorful Benito Juárez Mercado.
The concert was in an old downtown theater, elaborate, beautiful and oversold! The crowd was appreciative and friendly, and here we had one of our favorite after parties which included grasshopper hord'oeuvres...then and after party after party at the hotel.
